Vacation, had to get away

I'm really sorry that this is such a lame "update" - but it's all I have time for right now. The Gentleman Friend and I are looking to go on vacation in May to either Mexico or Puerto Rico. We are NOT interested in staying at a "gay" hotel or resort; however, it would be nice if the area had a few gay nightlife options to offer. (Gotta meet that third party somehow!)

Anyway, if you have any recommendations, leave a comment or e-mail me. Thanks in advance!

Go to Rincon, PR. It's liberal like Berkley, they take american dollars, and it's absolutely gorgeous and isolated, lots of friendly locals and it's not all built up, it resembles the PR of the '30. The majority of locals speak english, but love it when you try to speak in spanish.

This update is all you have time for now? I didn't know your yogurt-eating schedule was so rigorous!

I've never been to Mexico but that "3rd Party" may not be as easy to find if you stay there. I know San Juan, PR is rather gay friendly and actually was propositioned in the street by a guy. If you want to avoid the gay ghetto, don't stay in the El Condado district because in addition to the "gay" theme to the neighborhood, it is also the ugliest part of the city-very old strip mall/broken down beach scenery. Good luck in the search.

I just got back from Puerto Vallarta, the supposed "gay city" of Mexico. They have some good gay clubs, beautiful city. I recommend checking out a resort there.

just be careful of the white sex-slave trade industry down there!

In San Juan, PR, I've stayed a couple times at a little hotel in Condado called "At Wind Chimes Inn." Yes, the name is cheezy, but the place is really nice, reasonably priced, and the bartenders are friendly. It's a block off the beach, which is beautiful, and walking distance from gay bars and restaurants.

Le Meridien Hotel in Cancun. Costs a fortune, but it will dispell any idea you have of Cancun with drunken fratboys and mega-resorts.

You have to decide first, beach or city?
If it's beach the definitely go to Puerto Vallarta, it's great and fun and not as overrated as Cancun or Acapulco. But in the other side Cancun still is reaaaally cheap because of the hurricane and pretty recovered.

Now, if you want city then go to Mexico City, Puebla, Valle de Bravo, Cuernavaca and the surroundings, cheap, beautiful, not dangerous at all, tourism is really big in here right now so you'll be basically treated like a god. The city thing is different but interesting, trust me I'm 18 and live in Puebla and for spring break I'm not going to a beach this year because it WILL be exactly as last year and the year before and even next year, lol

PS. I went to PR over the summer and it was just ok.
I have more info if you need it, LOL

Try Jamaica!

That's where we're going at least.

Best gay night life in Mexico is in Mexico City, try La Condesa, which is a zone full of bars, restaurants and nicght clubs (not so openly gay but really cool), the Zona Rosa (which es really gay but not so cool), and the best gay night club you'll ever see: Living, which is located at the Reforma avenue next to the tallest building in Mexico. Other cities: Playa del Carmen, near to Cancun but so much better. Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.

wherever tom cruise buys his boy hookers. or ricky martin fucks his half brother.

I have no idea what running vividblurry costs you personally. I love your site and I offer this comment as respectfully as possible.

Please do not lower yourself to these ads. You are undermining your own integrity and reputation you've created.

It's a starter version of selling out. We are bombarded by capitalism every minute of every day.

Just be above it. I would have alot of respect for you.

Toby -- - its Eddie and Brian live from Puerto Rico (no joke). The Caribe Hilton is a really really nice resort - it has a nice swim up bar which could help you and the gentleman friend ensure that you leave a little piece of your liver here in sunny PR.

Not to make any of you b*@#$ches jealous - but its 85 and we are pool side

*kisses*

I have been to Mexico City and Oaxaca quite a bit, I'd recommend Mexico City even if you're also going to spend some time at the beach. Most of us never learned anything about non-European North American culture, in Mexico City you can experience a lot of it, past and present. The pyramids at Teotihuacan outside the city are amazing, and the anthropology museum is one of the world's best. Plus the food!

Gotta disagree with Rusty on the challenges of a third party in Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is great with a thriving gay scene (20 bars, I think?). Casa Cupulo is very nice, and though gay, which you said you didn't want, it's a quiet and private place with good service.

Third party - hmmm.

I might be a little biased since Im Puerto Rican and live in PR, but I think PR would be a great destination. If you stay in the Metro area of SJ then you might get a bit bored of the scenery. But the good thing about PR is that you can go anywhere in the island from anywhere in the island and back in the same day. So you can travel to many many places, not just stay in the SJ area where your hotel is. There are many many beaches, there are clubs, museums (sp?), there are water parks, a car racing track, there's tons of stuff to do. Since we are and allied territory of the US, the currency we use is american dollars, and there are some very gay friendly places. Like Cornelius said, Rincon is a great place to visit. Good beach, surfing.

The Ritz-Carlton in Cancun is wonderful. Nice beaches, great rooms and good restraunts. Pretty Secluded.
Puerto Vallarta is an exciting place. I don't ever remember having as good a time as I did in PV. Be sure to spend a day at Blue Chair Beach!

Come to Puerto Rico. I'd do you and The Gentleman Friend.

You just described Tijuana. :)

My vote is PR. I went there three years ago with two friends and had the best time ever. We stayed in Isla Verde which was a little far away for me but hung out on Condado beach and old San Juan quite a bit. A few gay bars if you're interested. We hung out at a gay beach bar quite a bit just because the music was good and it was right on the beach. If you go to PR, you absolutely MUST plan to go to Culebra for a day. It's a tiny tiny island off PR (you take a ferry over) and they have isolated beaches that make you feel like you're on an episode of Lost or something. It's gorgeous. Skip the Bacardi factory - it's lame as shit. Loquillo Beach is also ranked pretty high as one of the nicest beaches on earth.

Toby, okay. You have teased us long enough. who and WHAT is this "gentleman" of whom you speak at increasingly decreasing intervals?

I'm worried sick. We know nothing about him.

What if he gets you down there in some third-world country and rips out your spinal column and hawks it to the natives as a necklace?

It's happened, you know.

Or is it that he's just plain ugly, and you don't want anyone to know?

P.S.: All the cool gays in Texas (and I know their number is few) seem to be going to P.R. this year. I hear it's a hoot.

oh oh oh, I know!! I'm responsible for Toby and the Gentleman friend meeting...

Yeah, that's right.

And you can know the story. Cash money and short bottoms get the scoop, bitches.

I'm beginning to doubt your commitment to sparkle motion.

Dude my boyfriend and I just got back from the Dominican Republic.

I know it's not as popular as Puerto Rico--belief me we were a little unsure ourselves--but it is way cheaper. Cheap and you still get all the shit you would elsewhere. All the resorts are all-inclusive (I think there wasn't a hour I was sober while there), and barely any Americans. All the tourists we met were Europeans and Canadians, which was a major plus.

From what I know Santo Domingo has the gay scene, but we ended up going to a place called Punta Cana because, well, it looked nicer (more tropical) and we wouldn't have to deal with the locals that much. The town is quite wealthy, so imagine.

Enjoy!

I think he's referred to his friend as the Gentleman Friend for so long that he's forgotten that it's a secret, and he has simply continued using the designation "Gentleman Friend" out of habit.

I just had a nice (and cheap) time in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. Pictures on the blog in late March archives. It's more adventurous, with snorkeling, marlin fishing and ecotours, but the pace there was slow and the prices low. There's a Best Western there.

Ive been looking into the island 20 min by air from PR called VIEQUES
really reasonable and beautiful theres a gay friendly town in the south

Check this out:

have you thought about costa rica? i think it's a much better trip for the money than anywhere in mexico or puerto rico.

Soooo.... are you waiting til after the vacation to update?

Toby I enjoy your blog but you're losing your touch. :(

Did you die?
